THURSDAY

Definition and example:
The definition and example pattern of organization includes (as its name implies) a definition and an example. Authors often help readers understand the words and ideas they use. If a word or term is likely to be new to readers, the author may include a definition. Then, to make sure that definition is clear, the author may explain it with one or more examples.

Activity 4 (A definition and example paragraph)

The paragraph below defines a term, explains it a bit, and then gives examples of it. After reading the paragraph, answer the questions that follow.

Emblems are gestures or body motions that mean the same as words of phrases. Just as we learn the meanings of words, we learn the meanings of emblems in our society. One common emblem in many places is the thumbs-up signal, which often expresses success or hope. Other emblems are shrugging your shoulders, which can mean “I don’t know,” and nodding the head to communicate “yes.”

1.      What term is being defined?
2.      Which sentence gives the definition?
3.      Which sentence explains something about the term?
4.      In which sentences does the first example appear?
5.      How many examples are given in all?

Activity 5
Identify the pattern used in the following passages.
1.      One of the basic values and goals of American society is freedom. Another is equality. And a third is democracy.
2.      Cardiovascular exercise is physical activity that burns calories while increasing the breathing and pulse rate. Swimming is an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise.
3.      Snap judgments are opinions formed on the spot, often on little evidence or proof. One instance of such judgment is deciding that you new school is dangerous because you saw two kids fighting on your first day at the school.
4.      Orangutans in the wild eat numerous types of fruit, including wild plum, breadfruit, and strangling fit. They also eat leaves and bark.
